Origin of Panchmukhi Hanuman

Panchmukhi Hanuman is said to have originated during the Ramayana war, when Lord Rama's brother Lakshmana was severely wounded by the demon king Ravana's son Indrajit. Indrajit had used a powerful weapon called Brahmastra, which could only be countered by another Brahmastra or by the blessings of Lord Brahma. Lord Hanuman was entrusted with the task of bringing the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas, which could revive Lakshmana. However, on his way back, he encountered a huge obstacle in the form of Ahiravana, the brother of Ravana and the king of Patala (the netherworld). Ahiravana had a boon from Lord Brahma that he could only be killed by extinguishing five lamps in five different directions simultaneously. He kidnapped Lord Rama and Lakshmana and took them to his palace in Patala, where he planned to sacrifice them to his deity Mahamaya.

Lord Hanuman followed Ahiravana to Patala and discovered his plan. He realized that he had to assume a five-faced form to extinguish the five lamps at once. He prayed to Lord Shiva, who granted him the boon of becoming Panchmukhi Hanuman. He then took the form of a giant monkey with five faces and ten arms, each holding a different weapon. He entered the palace of Ahiravana and fought with him and his army. He then reached the chamber where the lamps were kept and blew them out with his five mouths. He then killed Ahiravana and rescued Lord Rama and Lakshmana. He also brought back the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshmana. Thus, he accomplished his mission and earned the blessings of Lord Rama.
